An art exhibition entitled ‘Head of the Sea’ by renowned artist Jim McKee will open at SIAR, The Quay, Kinvara at 7pm on Thursday 3rd May. The show coincides with the 25th Cuckoo Fleadh.
The exhibition will feature sixteen new works of art created by McKee which capture the music, sporting, coastal lifestyle and characters of Kinvara.
“Kinvara means ‘head of’ or ‘mouth of’ the sea and having lived there for many years I wanted to express in a new collection some of the many sights, the people and the places that I find so fascinating,” says McKee. “The piece, ‘Mackerel Man,’ for example, was an idea I have had for many years having watched a local fisherman cycle every day on his bike with his catch in his basket.”
Jim wanted to capture the fantastic year it has been for sport in the area and includes some portraits of hurling legends old and new. “I was also delighted to have been commissioned to paint this year’s official poster for the Cuckoo Fleadh and the annual Cruinniu na mBad poster, both of which will be on show in the exhibition.”
The exhibition will be opened by guest speaker Dr Karen Weekes and will run throughout the month of May 2018.
Jim will also perform a new self-penned song of the same title (Head of the Sea) at the opening event.
Siar owner Mike Considine is excited to have Jims artworks back in Kinvara. “Jim has an exceptional eye that comes from his closeness to the people and landscape of this unique area of the Burren and Wild Atlantic Way. We are delighted to host Jim and look forward to a great launch, show and festival.”
