The Silver Branch
We are hosting two screening of the award winning documentary The Silver Branch in Clare on Sunday 20th in Kinvara Community Hall at 6pm and Thursday 24th in Hotel Doolin at 8PM
The Silver Branch is a bittersweet evocation of the end of an era; Depicting the life of farmer/poet, Patrick McCormack, who’s deeply entwined with ancestral traditions and the natural world. Patrick must stand up for all that is sacred to him when the government threatens his way of life. This cinematic eulogy to nature, landscape and culture, invites the viewer to follow in a hypnotic journey into the self.

Darkness into Light – Newly composed song
Darkness into Light is almost upon us and here’s a song composed by the members of the Dolmen Centre and the 5th and 6th class pupils in Ms O’Keeffe’s Class in St Joseph’s NS. The song is a result of six sessions working in the Dolmen Centre with singer songwriter Ruth Dillon and is a powerful reminder to be a good friend, look out for one another and most of all as one of the main lines in the song suggests – turn the darkness into light. Thanks to the Community Council for funding to record this joint project and thanks to Frank Hall for his expertise and help with the project. Listen out for this song as you gather at the school to get ready to walk in the early hours of Saturday morning the 12th of May.
Fleadh na gCuach
The 25th Fleadh na gCuach will take place over the May Bank Holiday in Kinvara – see full programme below. The cream of Irish traditional music will be featured with over 90 renowned musicians confirmed for sessions in the pubs and cafes of the village throughout the weekend. A number of excellent concerts will also take place including an opportunity to experience the eclectic mix of Irish and Sardinian traditional music in ‘Ireland meets Sardinia: Traditional music from two Islands’ which will be hosted by KAVA in Kinvara Courthouse at 7pm.
Kinvara Christmas Lights Fundraising
Every year ‘Kinvara Christmas lights’ add something new to the village Christmas light display, whilst often having to replace faulty or storm damaged lights from previous years. This year we decided to start our fundraising much earlier and try out some different fundraising ideas. In January we applied to Galway county council for a grant under the name of “Soilse Mara” meaning “lights of the sea” and are delighted to announce that we have been awarded €2000. Thanks to Councillor Joe Byrne for advice and help with the application. This was a great start to Kinvara’s 2018 fundraising. Continue reading “Kinvara Christmas Lights Fundraising”
The Dolmen Centre
The Dolmen Centre are please to announce that they are working on a piece of music in collaboration with Ms O Keeffe’s 5th and 6th class students which will be played during the gathering at The Darkness to Light event in May. We would also like to send out a reminder that our pre loved bookshop is open from 9.30-4.30 Monday to Friday and all are welcome to come and visit. We would also like to congratulate Helen Lane and her group for the great work done and were happy to have been involved.
Cuckoo Fun Run
Kinvara Community Council organise just one Annual Fundraiser and that is the Cuckoo Fun Run and the funds raised will be jointly donated to Kinvara Men’s Shed and Kinvara Heritage Group/Friends of St Coman’s Church Conservation Project. The Cuckoo Fun Run/Walk is held on the Sunday of the May Bank Holiday which this year is the 6th May.
The 10k walk will be a looped marshalled walk up the Northampton Road through Caheravoneen and back into Kinvara by the Ardrahan road with 2 water stops. We would really like to encourage all the walkers around to make the effort to partake this year and make this a real Community Event. We will of course also have the 10k run with the Perpetual Trophies to the first man and woman home. As well we have a 5k run and walk which adults and young people can enter as well as the 1k and 2k runs for children up to 3rd class and above that respectively. There will be medals for ALL partaking children and Gold Silver and Bronze in each category. We will confirm starting times closer to the date. If you have an opinion on the starting times please email us at commcenkinvara@gmail.com. All events commence at the Community Centre and we hope to have Kinvara Community Radio there again providing live interviews and entertainment. Complimentary squash, water, tea/coffee to all participants. See you there…
