Launch of Energy Master Plan: Kinvara and district Sustainable Energy Community have been working on a master plan for our area. During the last 10 months we have held a public meeting to inform the community about the importance of reducing our home energy and of grants available to assist in this. We also held a Drop in energy advice clinic and a one to one discussion with our Energy Consultant Laurence O Reilly. Our funding for the above was granted by SEAI and we would like to thank Galway County Council for assisting with cash flowing the grant. The Climate Action Office in Galway Co Co also grant aided towards the project.

Our work included analysing CSO data relating to local use of public transport and home heating options and we also carried out a total of 10 BERs on local housing which confirmed the CSO data.

The next step is the most interesting as it will involve coming up with solutions that will assist in reducing our carbon emissions as a community.

We would love to see as many of you as possible at this upcoming event on Saturday 28th of September in the Community Centre from 12 to 2pm. Our mentor Orla Nic Suibhne will organise a number of electric vehicles to be brought along for this event and all your questions will be encouraged. If you would like to join our group email us at kindissec@gmail.com.

Galway Hooker Sailing club are expanding to Kinvara and will hold an information evening on Wednesday 4th September at 7.30pm. Situated in the heart of the Claddagh, Galway City, the Galway Hooker Sailing Club is a diverse community of people who work together to restore and sail our city’s traditional wooden boat, the Galway Hooker. Our club’s vision is to promote and teach the skills required to sail and restore these traditional boats in both our local Galway community and beyond, to help preserve our great Irish heritage.

Established in 2019, Galway Hooker Sailing Club is a non-for-profit organisation, with all proceeds re-invested back into the club to continue our mission. We are an all-inclusive club and membership open to anyone who shares the same passion and drive as our club vision which is to keep this traditional type of sailing alive for future generations.

We are a category one sailing club, affiliated with Irish Sailing and a recognised IS training centre to run IS accredited courses in both in Sailing and Powerboating.

SALT is back! Come join us on Thursday evenings 7-9pm from September 19th, for group-song; theatre games and more. Bring a cuppa in a keep cup (expect cake!) and some water. Wear comfortable clothing – i.e trainers and joggers or similar. The SALT Collective are people who sing for joy; healing; fun and who create new intentional work. This term we will be joined by a wonderful group song leader, Frankie McGiveny from Miltown Malbay, who’s been leading a community song group there for a number of years. The cost is 8e per person. This may reduce depending on the amount of people who attend. Look forward to seeing you all then.

The Irish Guide Dogs for the blind are doing a charity cycle on Saturday the 28th of September 2024. I was asked by the manager of the Galway Branch if the community of Kinvara could support the cycle by handing out refreshments at St. Josephs School on that day. If you have about 2 hours to spare on the day please contact Gerhard at 0860841218 or gtlanze@yahoo.de. Please see the link below for more information about the event. https://www.guidedogs.ie/events/galway-cycle-2024

Kinvara Palestine Solidarity Group: The war on Gaza continues with no signs of an imminent ceasefire. Our group has been active throughout the summer. We organised a series of vigils at Shannon airport, which ran every Saturday and Sunday throughout July and August, between 6am and 3pm. We were joined by people from Clare, Galway, Dublin, Kerry, Cork and many other parts of Ireland, making incoming and outgoing travellers aware of the US Military use of Shannon airport, a direct contravention of Irish neutrality. The vigils will continue every Sunday during September. Support from motorists has been extremely heartening at these vigils, and also at the ‘bridgils’ organised by the Gort Palestine Solidarity Group on a motorway bridge near town.

We ran a hugely successful stall over the weekend of the Cruinniú, selling books, badges, flags and textiles. There was great interest in the stall and we engaged in lively conversations with visitors from Ireland and beyond.

Kate Thompson, with assistance from other group members, has put together a small book, Palestine A – Z, which will be launched by Senator Catherine Connolly at Charlie Byrne’s in Galway on September 13th at 6pm. All welcome. Copies are available now from the group. Contact kinvarasolidarity@gmail.com to get a copy of the book, or to find out how to join us in our ongoing support for Palestine.

You are invited: to attend the Annual General Meeting of Kinvara Community Council on Wednesday 12th June at 8 pm in the Community Centre. This brief meeting will be held in conjunction with the:

  • Opening of the newly renovated and energy-efficient building following a €250,000 upgrade;

Community Centre Upgrade: Work has now finished on a major project to upgrade the Community Centre. Following an award from the Department of Rural Affairs Community Centre Investment Fund, a committee was formed to appoint engineering advisors and contractors. The work included building insulation, heat pump technology, mechanical ventilation, solar panels, and electrical upgrades. The project will be unveiled at our AGM on Wednesday 12th June at 8 pm. If you are interested in sustainable energy, members will be on hand to explain the benefits, grants, process and our experiences.

Councillor Joe Byrne: Following the forthcoming local elections on 7th June, Joe Byrne will step down as a Councillor. Joe has been the voice of Kinvara on Galway County Council for our community, businesses and individuals. We have all benefitted from his work and Kinvara Community Council will recognise Joe’s contribution to our community at our AGM on Wednesday 12th June at 8 pm in the Community Centre. You are invited to attend to mark the end of this remarkable career.
